The Sophomore Counseling Curriculum

The PLAN Program

The PLAN program is a curriculum-based, nationally normed assessment program designed to help 10th grade students explore the world of possibilities open to them, make the most of their opportunities in high school and beyond, and guide them as they start thinking about future educational and career planning. PLAN assesses academic progress, provides an early indicator of college readiness, helps students understand and explore the wide range of career options open to them, and assists them in enhancing a high school coursework plan that prepares them to achieve their post-high school goals. The PLAN is designed to test students in the following academic ares: English, reading, mathematics, and science. The PLAN primary focus in each of those academic areas is on higher-order thinking skills. Your 10th grader will be taking this assessment this year.

Discover

The Discover is a computer-based career guidance and information system which is used to assess the interests, abilities, and job values of the student. This process can provide the data needed to make valid occupational linkages databases of occupations, schools and training institutions, scholarships, majors, and military options offer the necessary information to complete the career planning process, which your 10th grader will complete.

Empowerment Meeting

The Counseling Department is looking at ways to provide more responsive services for our students in their sophomore year. We believe that the creation of the Sophomore Empowerment Meeting helps families to have a greater understanding of their sophomore's academic ability and challenges. During this 30 minute meeting we will discuss your sophomore's current credits, as well as possible class selections for the next year. We believe that it's important for each family to have this time to check in with the sophomore counselor to make sure that their student is on track for graduation.
